Why an eye test?

Sharp eyesight is crucial for safe driving, as it allows the driver to recognize traffic signs, obstacles and other vehicles early on.

The eye test with Landolt rings is an essential step in obtaining or renewing a driver’s license according to §67 of the German Driving License Regulations (FeV).
This test ensures that only individuals with sufficient vision are on the road, thus increasing road safety.

Landolt rings (see image below) are a special optometric tool used in eye tests to determine visual acuity. The test subject’s task is to correctly identify the direction of the gap while the rings vary in size.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please don't forget to bring your glasses/contact lenses with you; the eye test will be conducted with corrective lenses!

How does the eye test work?

The vision test is performed on a specially approved vision testing device, which outwardly resembles a microscope.

  • If you look into the device through the eyepieces, you will be able to see so-called Landolt rings (see image below) if you have sufficient eyesight.
  • The vision test consists of identifying the opening direction of the respective circles.
  • Each eye is tested individually!
  • The eye test is considered „passed“ if at least 70% of all Landolt rings are correctly identified with each eye.
  • If you fail the eye test, an ophthalmological examination or, if you wear glasses, a new fitting of glasses by an optician may be necessary.
